Getting here

From Ilhéus Airport, there are four ways to reach Barra Grande:

1. Rental car — direct route
Vehicles are available to rent at the airport. Take the BA-001 to the BR-030 access road leading to the Maraú Peninsula and Barra Grande. As road conditions on the final stretch can vary — particularly during the rainy season — we recommend checking the route before you travel.

2. Transfer to Camamu + speedboat
An alternative is to hire a transfer from Ilhéus Airport to the port of Camamu and cross Camamu Bay by speedboat to Barra Grande. A practical option for those who prefer to avoid the dirt-road stretch. Boat schedules should be checked in advance and booked whenever possible.

3. Charter flight
For a faster and more exclusive arrival, charter flights are available to Barra Grande Aerodrome (SIRI code) on the Maraú Peninsula. The service is subject to availability, weather conditions and aerodrome scheduling, and should be arranged well in advance.

4. Direct road transfer
When available, private transfers can be arranged from Ilhéus Airport directly to Barra Grande by road, covering the entire journey overland — ideal for those who prefer not to drive or take the boat crossing.

We recommend planning your journey well ahead and confirming road conditions, boat schedules and service availability before departure.

Getting around

The beaches and main points of interest on the Maraú Peninsula are connected by unpaved roads whose conditions may vary with the weather and the time of year.

Guests arriving without their own vehicle have several options: taxis, private transfers and jardineiras — adapted pick-up trucks used as passenger transport. It is also possible to hire cars or quad bikes on the Peninsula, giving you greater freedom to explore Barra Grande, Taipu de Fora and the surrounding beaches.

A car offers the greatest comfort for families and larger groups, while a quad bike is a practical and fun way to discover the Peninsula. During high season, we strongly recommend booking vehicles in advance.

Tip: bring some cash. Access to banks and ATMs in the area is limited, and cash can be useful for small purchases or when internet connectivity is unreliable.

The destination

Barra Grande is a complete and endlessly surprising destination, with something to offer every type of traveller. A place where pristine beaches, freshwater lagoons, Atlantic Rainforest trails, outstanding cuisine and a laid-back atmosphere come together in perfect harmony.

Among the unmissable experiences are the celebrated natural pools of Taipu de Fora — perfect for swimming and snorkelling at low tide. For the more adventurous, the Bromélias Gigantes Trail winds through unspoilt beaches and lush vegetation, leading to the Lagoa Azul and the beautiful Lagoa do Cassange. Along the way, the Morro do Farol viewpoint offers a breathtaking panorama of the Maraú Peninsula.

Another unforgettable way to discover the region is to cycle the beaches on an electric bicycle at low tide, riding through Barra Grande, Ponta do Mutá, Três Coqueiros, Bombaça and Taipu de Fora — an experience that is a highlight in itself.

By sea, boat tours reveal the islands of Camamu Bay — including Pedra Furada and Goió — and the impressive Cachoeira do Tremembé waterfall, where the vessel glides right up to the cascade.

As the afternoon fades, the sunset at Ponta do Mutá transforms the horizon into a true spectacle. To complete the experience, Barra Grande offers outstanding restaurants, charming beach clubs, bars, lively events and a vibrant village centre where Bahian cuisine, fresh seafood, music and local warmth set the tone for every evening.

Whether you come to rest, explore nature, seek new adventures or simply savour the pleasures of the table and the sea, Barra Grande delivers a unique and unforgettable experience every single day.

A once-in-a-lifetime experience

Watch the sunset at Ponta do Mutá

Some places are not merely seen — they are felt. At Ponta do Mutá, the meeting of Camamu Bay's tranquil waters with the day's final light creates one of the most moving scenes on the Maraú Peninsula.

As the sun approaches the horizon, the sky blazes with shades of gold, orange and red, mirrored across the water. It is a spectacle that invites you to slow down, raise a glass and simply be present in the moment.

We recommend arriving around 4:30 PM to choose a good spot and witness the full transformation of the sky from beginning to end.

You can enjoy the sunset with your feet in the sand or take advantage of the beach clubs and bars in the area, offering cuisine, cocktails, fresh juices and music — from live saxophonists to DJs and lounge sets, depending on each venue's programme.

Where to enjoy the sunset

  • Obar: barefoot beach atmosphere, cuisine, drinks and a welcoming vibe.
  • Macunaíma: restaurant and lounge bar specialising in seafood, risottos, appetisers and live music.
  • Tulum Beach Club: fine dining, signature cocktails, DJs and a sophisticated oceanfront experience.
  • Camboa Sports & Food: a sunset-facing venue combining gastronomy, rooftop, sport and lifestyle.
  • UAU Beach Club: pool, beach, dining, signature drinks and music.

During high season, some venues offer special programming and may require reservations or charge an entry fee. We recommend checking schedules and events in advance.

Whatever your mood — tranquillity, gastronomy or a lively night out — the sunset at Ponta do Mutá is the kind of moment that stays with you forever.
